Connecticut Conference 2010 Spending Plan: OCWM |
Conference Life |
|
What is OCWM Basic Support? In the United Church of Christ, though the congregation is the fundamental unit of mission, we affirm that outreach and mission is never just local. We are connected to one another, across boundaries of neighborhood, class, race, and national border. Our Church's Wider Mission is the name we use to describe the shared work we do as a United Church of Christ denomination through our Global Ministries, Connecticut Conference, national ministries, and UCC-related institutions. This work is made possible through generosity of UCC congregations. Each year every congregation decides how much of its members' financial support will be shared with the larger church as a gift for OCWM Basic Support. Congregations send their OCWM gifts to the Connecticut Conference, which sends 63 percent to the national and global ministries of the UCC. The balance--37 percent--supports the Connecticut Conference ministries, in combination with Per Capita Income, Friends of the Conference Contributions, and income from unrestricted endowment funds dedicated for the Conference?s general support. This 8.5 x 14 fold-over brochure gives a snapshot of the Connecticut Conference's ministries and the way in which OCWM gifts are allocated to them. |

Church Stewardship in a Time of Economic Uncertainty |
Stewardship |
|
Achieving better-than-normal stewardship results in less-than-normal times also requires practical responses. We must move stewardship to the center of our lives together as Christians, and we must make sure we are constantly educating about stewardship and using best practices in how we carry out the "mechanics" of annual stewardship efforts. |

Is Your Church Ready? |
Church Administration |
|
If the fire alarm rings during a Sunday morning Worship Service (assuming, of course, that your church has a fire alarm system), is an evacuation plan in place? Do you know which exit to take from the Sanctuary? Is anyone prepared to direct visitors and to assist those with mobility problems to an exit? Has the Church School had a fire drill? Do the teachers know what to do when the alarm goes off? Do you know who the Emergency Management Officer is in your community? Is your church prepared to respond to a community-wide disaster? Is there a plan in place with the rest of the faith community in your town so resources are shared and not duplicated? These are just a few questions that every congregation needs to answer. The Local Church Check List will help you get started on an assessment of your church’s preparedness in case of an emergency or community disaster. |

Building a Firm Foundation: A Creation-Friendly Building Guide for Churches |
Global Concerns |
|
Our church buildings reflect who we are as a community of faith. Buildings that are built sustainably or "green" outwardly reflect our concern for and responsibility of God's beloved creation including those human communities that can be disproportionately impacted by unsustainable building practices. "Green" buildings also inwardly reflect this concern to congregants, reminding us of our responsibilities to live in loving community with all of God's creatures. This resource was developed by the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA. |
